Germany is Nate’s ‘soul country’, and what I mean by that is…he is in love with it. He is pulled there in many ways that I admire… he loves the food, the culture, the language, the architecture, and the cars 🙂 When he asked me to join him on a German adventure, touring multiple cities and spending hours and hours on trains to get there, I said YES!!!! For this post, I’ll focus on Kronberg and Heidelberg.

We took the train to Kronberg from Darmstadt. This was the cutest little town! Complete with a castle right in the middle appropriately named Kronberg Castle. It is defined as a middle-ages rock castle…. perfect!! Take a minute to read about here, they have pictures of the interior….

I WISH it had been open so I could have seen it in person. Unfortunately, it was closed at the time. This castle and the grounds date back to the 12th century, it’s astounding that it is still standing (insert ‘they don’t make’em like they used to’ here) 🙂 The town is built around the castle and is full of restaurants and shops. It was a pleasant walk around town and highly recommend.
We then walked to the Schlosshotel Kronberg which looked like it was out of a storybook. And, in fact, it kind of was.

It was built between 1889 and 1893 for the German Empress Victoria, who lived there till 1901. Absolutely beautiful grounds surrounded the hotel…um, why aren’t we staying HERE?? I vowed that next time we visit Germany, staying at this hotel was a must.

We then took yet another train to Frankfurt to catch our tour departing for Heidelberg! Heidelberg is quite an experience…again, very storybook-esque. But then, Germany is just one of those countries where every town looks that way! Very romantic and majestically old.
We did a tour from Frankfurt that drove us to Heidelberg for a few hours. The first place we went to was Heidelberg Castle, built on a hillside over-looking the town. It was quite impressive. This castle dates back to the 16th century.
It has seen better days…there are areas that look like old castle ruins, and there are other areas that look cared for and repaired. But, that’s what makes it so fascinating, right? The history behind the ruins. There’s actually an interesting museum inside one of the buildings there focused on pharmacy, herbs, old-school medicine, and such. The view from the balcony is a must-do 🙂 The sun was just peaking through the sky when we got this picture… looks ethereal.

Germany is a beautiful country. We went to many other places, look for future blogs featuring The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, our trip to the little town of Rothenburg, and Nurnberg!
We encourage you to explore this great planet we live on… we are always so grateful during and after a trip. One place we use to stay on top of cheap international airfares is Scott’s Cheap Flights. Set up an account and get alerts, I have seen airfare to London for $200 round trip….seriously. When the deals happen, be ready to book and get out there and experience a beautiful new place!
Travel Safe,
-Heather and Nate
